A 51-year-old Antonov An-12BK cargo plane operated by Meridian Air Cargo that departed Niš this evening and was heading to Amman in Jordan is believed to have crashed near the city of Kavala in North-eastern Greece. Eyewitnesses said the aircraft was on fire before it crashed and that they had heard explosions. Local officials said fifteen firefighters and seven fire engines have been deployed to the crash site, with more rescuers on the way. According to media reports, the cargo aircraft requested clearance to make an emergency landing at nearby Kavala Airport after issues with one of its engines, but did not manage to reach the runway. The plane was carrying weapons and had no passengers on board. There are currently no reports of casualties or the number of crew on board. Video footage uploaded by Greece's national broadcaster ERT showed the aircraft in flames descending fast before hitting the ground in what appeared to be an explosion.
