The governing Party of Democratic Action (SDA) in Bosnia and Herzegovina has unveiled its plans to relocate Sarajevo Airport. It comes in the lead-up to this weekend’s general election in the country. The SDA has proposed for the new site of the airport to be located in Visoko, some thirty kilometres north of Sarajevo. The party argues that due to its current location, the airport is unable to meaningfully expand its infrastructure, while the urban neighbourhood that surrounds it poses further limitations. The idea to move Sarajevo Airport to a new location has been floated for decades. The airport is currently in the midst of an expansion, which has been severely delayed. It recently submitted an expansion plan to the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Federation, which received approval. The SDA’s plan calls for the airport’s relocation by 2035, while the existing site would be turned into a park and lake.
