Lufthansa flights are expected to be cancelled by yet another strike by its ground staff this Thursday and Friday. It comes as the Verdi union seeks to increase pressure ahead of another round of negotiations with Lufthansa’s management next week. Staff will stop work from 4.00 CET on Thursday morning until 7:10 CET on Saturday. This could mean some of Lufthansa’s evening flights to cities in the former Yugoslavia on Wednesday evening may be affected as their return to base is scheduled on Thursday morning when the strike will already be in effect. Delays and cancellations are probable, with previous similar strikes disrupting flights and prompting criticism from Lufthansa. The German carrier is yet to release how many flights will be affected by the industrial action but has said disruptions will be "extensive". Lufthansa has a total of 26 flights planned from Frankfurt and Munich to cities in the former Yugoslavia this Thursday and Friday, including eight flights to Belgrade, six to Ljubljana, two to Sarajevo, three to Skopje and seven to Zagreb. "It is inexplicable to anyone that this company [Lufthansa] is about to announce a record annual performance this week, and is going to increase bonuses for its board considerably, while staff on the ground with an hourly wage of sometimes thirteen euros don't even know how they're meant to make ends meet in some of Germany's most expensive cities", Verdi negotiator, Marvin Reschinsky, said.
