Turkish Airlines has operated its first flight using sustainable aviation fuel. The flight, which took off on February 2, highlights the airline’s increasing focus on sustainability and climate action.

First Flight

On February 2, TK1823 set off from Istanbul to Paris using sustainable aviation fuel, a first for Turkish Airlines. The Airbus A321 received fuel blended with the new fuel for a cleaner burn.

The airline works with its subsidiary, Turkish Fuel Services (TFS), for the fueling process. Produced from sustainable raw materials, the sustainable fuel does not contain any harmful metals and helps to decrease harmful particles and emissions.

We are the airline that flies to more countries than any other in the world. This also means we are the airline that introduces its guests to the richest biodiversity as well. We conduct our work towards achieving sustainability with that mentality and responsibility. Our first flight that uses sustainable resources is a part of that vision. We believe that future generations will continue to be able to discover the world and its preserved beauty with Turkish Airlines. Our efforts focused on protecting our world will continue.” – Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board & Executive Committee, Turkish Airlines

The fuel will initially be used once a week on flights between Istanbul and Stockholm, however, there are plans to increase its usage.

Sustainability is key for Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines has identified climate change as a key issue facing the industry and is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint. Sustainable aviation fuel is a step in the right direction, as the airline says the new fuel emits 87 percent less greenhouse gas compared to fossil fuels.

In addition to the use of sustainable aviation fuel, the airline has implemented several new sustainable initiatives as part of its commitment to a greener future. Inflight packaging has moved to starch-based materials that can easily break down in nature, bio packaging has become standard, and bags have been eliminated from travel and toy kits. Turkish Airlines has also doubled down on recycling and sorting waste eco-consciously.
