The Met Office has named a new storm, Storm Franklin, which it expects will bring high winds in the UK tonight – 20th February – and tomorrow – 21st February.

Recently, we saw the adverse effects to the aviation industry from Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice, resulting in 436 flights being cancelled across the UK and many aircrafts having to perform Go Arounds to ensure a safe landing.

The Met Office has given a Yellow Weather Warning for most of the UK today, with an Amber Weather Warning set to be introduced to some areas of Northern Ireland from Monday morning. Storm Franklin isn’t expected to have as high strong winds as former Storm Eunice; however, the wind is still set to reach 65-75mph in coastal areas within the Yellow Weather Warning and over 80mph in the Amber Weather Warning. This can still cause a high likelihood of cancellations and delays amongst public and aviation transport.

Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Andy Page, stated:

“Following the significant impacts of Storm Eunice on Friday, Storm Franklin will bring further high winds for many late on Sunday and into Monday, although not on the same scale as Eunice. Coastal areas of Northern Ireland, especially on that north coast, will get the strongest wind gusts, which could be around 80mph in a few places. Amber and Yellow Wind Warnings have been issued, and people should remain cautious ahead of the system that will bring 50-60mph wind gusts for much of the UK from late on Sunday and through Monday.”
