Further Details

The country’s flagship caught on fire last Thursday morning whilst receiving minor repair work at the Artic port of Murmansk. Fire emergency services, however, were immediately called to the scene, and the fire was extinguished by 11:30 am. Though the incident was combatted efficiently, 20 members of the crew were on board at the time, putting them at tremendous risk.

The head of United Shipbuilding Corporation, Alexei Rahkmanov, who was monitoring the events at the time, has since shared his thoughts on how the incident was handled.

“The damage control system worked quickly; there was no damage.”

Has this happened before?

Though shocking, this is not the first time that the Admiral Kuznetsov has experienced a tragedy. In October 2018. the ship was on board Russia’s most extensive floating dock, known as the PD-50 when the dock sank. During the unfortunate incident, a 70-ton crane fell directly onto Admiral Kuznetsov’s deck, causing significant damage. A total of four people were left injured as a result.

Admiral Kuznetsov’s misfortune, however, did not stop then as in December 2019, while under renovation, another fire broke out on board. The fire was caused after the ship’s underwater tank tore due to sparks from welding.

The incident led to the death of two people on board and fourteen injured individuals who suffered from burns and smoke inhalation. Due to these unforeseen circumstances, the aircraft carrier has been out of service for three years, causing significant difficulties for Russia’s aviation industry.

Evidently, the Admiral Kuznetsov has experienced a tumultuous journey since 2017, negatively affecting Russia’s aircraft industry.
