According to CNN, a number of new airlines are choosing to start operations this year. This includes new airlines such as Akussa Air which is a new ultra-low-cost airline to start early this year as well as previously defunct airlines such as Jet Airways which is set for new life this year. CNN describes starting a new airline during the pandemic as a bit of a wild card. So which airlines are choosing to start and how are they likely to benefit?

Low-Cost Airlines

An important point to note is that some of the carriers starting up a low or ultra-low-cost airline. These include Akussa In India (as mentioned previously), Norse Atlantic Airlines as well as Northern Pacific Airlines. Lowering the cost may involve for example designing and making use of aircraft in an optimal way and using high tech solutions to improve maintenance. It may also for example involve not including the cost of a meal in the price and charging extra for food and beverages onboard the flight.

The advantage of starting a low-cost airline now is that you may benefit from new customers who want to save money at a time when there have been job losses and fewer jobs available due to Covid. As there is also less demand for flights, they also have an opportunity to test their operations and learn from any mistakes at a time when the consequences of making them are less. This is because, as few customers will be interested in flying in the first place, the cost of making mistakes won’t have as much of an effect on the already low demand for flights. This means that once demand increases when Covid levels reduce these airlines are likely to become more efficient having learnt from any mistakes. They may also be more tuned into dealing with any new permanent flight rules that result from Covid as it changes from a pandemic to an endemic illness.

Offering More Destinations

Many of these airlines are offering to take customers to more destinations. Norse Atlantic Airlines is offering low-cost flights between Europe and North America. Northern Pacific Airlines is offering new routes between Asia and North America creating an airport hub in Anchorage, Alaska. The advantage of offering new routes at a time like this is that any authorities, as well as airports, are more likely to co-operate in creating these routes at a time when they are short of cash. Offering more routes may also help increase demand now as well as later as people try to take advantage of going to new places. As low-cost airlines are offering these opportunities customers can enjoy visiting new places on a budget.

As one can see airlines are choosing to start at a difficult time like this. However. they are taking this as a challenge. At the same time. they are offering cheaper fares as well as more choices for customers. However. the competition is tough. Airlines such as Avelo and Breeze which started last year are expanding. Avelo has expanded to New Haven in Connecticut as well as providing winter flights to destinations in Florida. Breeze continues to expand across the east, midwest and south of the United States. So not only do airlines starting this year have to compete with established budget airlines such as easyJet, they also have to compete with those that beat them to it and started up last year. However. with this increased competition and choice, the news can only get better for customers.
