Mexico City will increase International Airport Taxes by 7.7% in 2023

The Government of Mexico will increase the airport use fee known as TUA (Tarifa de Uso Aeroportuario). The new taxes will take effect on January 1, 2023; all travelers will see their tickets price more expensive by this decision, especially international travelers.

Mexico City’s new TUA taxes

In 2023, the airport use fee for domestic flights at Mexico City International Airport will be $28.04 and $53.24 for international flights. These amounts represent a 7.7% increase compared to the current year. The TUA at Mexico City International Airport is the highest of all airports in Mexico. In the ticket price, the TUA it’s included. It has been established by the airport operator and approved by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP). The calculation of the TUA represents 35-60% of the cost of the trip.

This airport fee typically it’s used to improve the airport infrastructure. The TUA collected at Mexico City’s main airport is used to pay the outstanding obligations of the new Mexico City International Airport (NAIM). The current administration decided to turn a military base into Mexico City’s second international airport, Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU)

In March of this year, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced the opening of a new Mexico City airport named Felipe Angeles. Although it has received much criticism, they have decided to construct the new airport next to the Santa Lucia air base, 50 km north of the capital.

Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) has increased its TUA fee to 6% this year for domestic and international flights. Every passenger has to pay the airport fee in Mexico except: 

1-infants under two (2) years old;

2-Foreign diplomats and representatives, as long as there is reciprocity from the other country;

3-Passengers only transiting or connecting through Mexican airports.

Many airlines are preparing for the new year, adding new destinations, especially this summer. It can say that this is a good initiative with the return of passengers, but it noted that the year 2022 had been a partial success. Many airlines have made a profit this year since the pandemic’s beginning; others are still struggling to recover from the three years. Nevertheless, this year Mexico has received almost 100 million passengers between January and November, representing from before the pandemic.
