American Airlines has announced that it will be scrapping its flights between Miami and Tel Aviv, Isreal, from March 24, 2023. This surprising news is coming less than two years after the route was first launched.

The Miami and Tel Aviv route was the airline’s longest route from its Miami hub. First launched in June 2021, the airline originally flew the destination thrice a week: on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays before it was upgraded to a daily schedule in October 2022.

Here is Why American Airlines is Scraping Miami-to-Tel Aviv Route

Although this is a cancellation many didn’t see coming, the carrier spokesperson says it is part of the airline’s continuous evaluation of its network.

As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American Airlines has made the difficult decision to discontinue its Miami (MIA) – Tel Aviv (TLV) service effective March 24, 2023. We will continue to operate daily service to Tel Aviv from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK). We’re proactively reaching out to customers affected by these changes to offer alternative travel arrangements.

The move by the airline to scrap its Miami-to-Tel Aviv route doesn’t mean it is exiting the Tel Aviv route entirely. The carrier will still maintain its daily flight to Tel Aviv from the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK),  New York.

The New York-to-Tel Aviv flight was launched in the Summer of 2021; before then, American Airlines hadn’t flown to Israel for more than five years. The airline also had plans to launch a third route from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) on March 5, 2022, but that plan never saw the light of the day as it was cancelled before it even launched.

bout American Airlines

Established in the 1930s, American Airlines is one of the oldest airlines in the world. Its headquarters in Dallas/Fort Worth International also stands as the world’s largest carrier in fleet size and the number of destinations covered.

In 2013, the airline merged with US Airways in an $11bn merger deal; in the merger, American Airlines’ name was taken. The merger saw the airlines flying to over 330 destinations across more than 50 countries globally in nearly 6,700 flights daily.

American Airlines also inherited US Airways’ longest route, Philadelphia (PHL), to Tel Aviv during the merger but cut the flight months after absorbing the airline because “the route had not been profitable.”
