After winning the title of “best airport,” Hamad International Airport (HIA) wants to become an artistic airport. This airport and Qatar Museums have debuted a one-of-a-kind collaboration entitled “Discover the Art of the Airport,” a unique walking tour through an immersive experience where guests can view impressive sculptures and art installations by leading artists worldwide.

Discover the Art of the Airport is part of their effort to revitalize the World Cup. From 20th November to 18th December 2022, Qatar will host the world’s biggest football tournament. Qatar is one of the first Gulf countries to establish a comprehensive contemporary public art program aimed at making art a part of everyday life.

Qatar Museums program includes some 70 works by more than 60 artists from Qatar, the Middle East, and around the world. Ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar will have over 40 new public art installations. Works include “Other Worlds” by American artist Tom Otterness; “Small Lie” by American artist KAWS; Peace to the World”, and “Lamp Bear” by Swiss artist Urs Fischer just a few of HIA’s permanent installations, encouraging passengers to communicate in a universal artistic language, breaking down language barriers and build connections with people from different continents and experience exciting arts inside.

The “Discover the Art of the Airport” hour-long guided tour at HIA costs USD 10 per person. Guests will learn about the story of each artwork while being escorted by a Discover Qatar expert guide. It is recommended that participants have at least two hours of transit time at the airport and arrive at the Discover Qatar desk 30 minutes before their scheduled tour.

The artwork, curated by the Public Art Department of the Qatar Museum of Art, will be featured in various locations at HIA, adding character and character to the airport’s open spaces while fostering dialogue and public spaces.

What Hamad Airport is doing is nothing new. In Paris, Charles de Gaulle Airport has long had the Espace Musees art zone, while Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport opened a “branch” of the Rijksmuseum. Similar treats can also be seen at Yogyakarta Airport in Indonesia and Changi Airport.

At HIA, the “World’s Best Airport” for the second year in a row by the prestigious SKYTRAX World Airport Awards 2022, passengers can immerse themselves in luxury and comfort with more than 90 retail outlets, 30 cafes and restaurants, and 12 lounges.

Across 40,000 square meters of terminal space, HIA offers a range of convenient amenities suitable for family, friends, and businesses. The airport has several playgrounds, TV zones, relaxation rooms, free new-generation Wi-Fi, prayer rooms, smoking areas, and sleeping pods.
