Just ten days after speculation about a new USA route hit Twitter, British Airways has announced its newest transatlantic route: London Heathrow (LHR) to Cincinnati (CVG). Flights from London to Cincinnati will begin in June 2023 on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, and they will use the flight numbers BA121 (outbound) and BA120 (inbound). The Ohio route comes just weeks after fellow British Isles carrier Aer Lingus announced its new route to Cleveland.

Crossing the ocean

Cincinnati will be the 27th US city served by British Airways and the 25th from Heathrow. It is the 32nd US airport to have flights to Heathrow.

Flights to the southern Ohio city will operate five times a week, on Monday-Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays. The BA121-designated journey will leave Heathrow at 16:05 local time and land in Cincinnati at 19:45 local time.

The return leg of the journey will operate using BA120; on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday it will leave Cincinnati at 21:30 local time and land the following morning at 10:15 local time. On Tuesdays, the flight will run five minutes later, taking off at 21:35 and landing at 10:20, all times local.

The Buckeye State

Ohio is the seventh-most populous and tenth-most densely populated of the American states. Greater Cincinnati is one of the state’s three largest metropolitan areas. Ohio is known as the ‘buckeye state’ after its buckeye trees.

The city of Cincinnati sits on the northern bank of the Ohio river, which forms the state border between Ohio and neighbouring Kentucky. It boasts three major sports teams: the Cincinnati Reds (Major League Baseball), the Cincinnati Bengals (National Football League), and FC Cincinnati (Major League Soccer). Its ambitious and historic architecture dates back 200 years and has earned the city its moniker of ‘Paris of America’.

Cincinnati’s international airport is the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which is actually on the other side of the Ohio river in Hebron, Kentucky.
