Farnborough Airport has launched its “Net Zero Roadmap,” establishing one of the aviation sector’s most ambitious Net Zero targets.

The airport, known as a hub for private planes, offers the full range of services required within a business aviation airport for passengers, crew, and aircraft.

Net Zero by 2030

Titled “Roadmap to Net Zero by 2030 – Where will you be?” the airport has committed to net zero emissions across all controllable outputs by 2030 or sooner, reducing their total emissions by a whopping 91%.

This target includes emissions from the landing and take-off cycle of aircraft up to 3,000 feet and surface access emissions generated by passenger journeys to and from the airport. While this is an ambitious target, it will be welcomed with the global climate crisis and associated protests hitting news headlines.

Farnborough Airport CEO, Simon Geere, said:

“When it comes to supporting the decarbonisation of the aviation industry, we want to lead the way at Farnborough Airport, which is why we have set ourselves one of the most ambitious targets in the industry by committing to be Net Zero across our controllable emissions by 2030 or sooner.”

Farnborough Airport began its life as a military airport and is credited as the location of the first powered flight in Britain. On 16 October 1908, Samuel Cody took off from the airport in his British Army Aeroplane No 1, kick-starting the UK aviation industry.

The private airport today offers crew, passengers and businesses a complete portfolio of business aviation services and housing some of the UK’s most prominent business jet companies.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Farnborough Airport is progressing with its strategy to become a global showcase for airport sustainability, having become the first business airport in the world to achieve carbon neutrality in 2018.

Ahead of this summer’s world-renowned Farnborough International Airshow, the airport offered Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to all aircraft using the airport at the same price as standard Jet A1 fuel.

SAF can reduce life cycle CO2 emissions by up to 80% per aircraft, which could go a long way to helping achieve this target.

Mr Geere finished by saying, “We want our customers to increasingly choose Farnborough Airport because of our sustainability credentials, alongside our market-leading state-of-the-art facilities and our exceptional levels of customer care.”
