Delta Airlines has announced it will launch a new route from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) to Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, in the summer of 2023. According to reports, the United States legacy carrier will use its Boeing 757-200 for this well-over six-hour journey over the Atlantic.

The 2,792-mile (4,494km) flight between the two cities will commence in May 2023, run through summer, and all through to October 27th; here is the itinerary.

Delta Airlines plans to operate the eastbound services four times a week: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays and the westbound services will also run four times a week; Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

The DL236 outbound flight will depart Detroit at 19:55 and arrive in Iceland at 06:20 (+1 day). At the same time, the DL237 will depart from Keflavik at 08:05 and arrive in DTW at 10:55.

Delta Airlines at turf wars with Icelandair?

The Atlanta-based carrier’s announcement follows one by Icelandair, who is set to begin operations between the two cities, thus creating a turf war months before the first flight even takes off.

The Icelandic airline announced its expansion plans in late November to link Detroit and Reykjavik beginning May 2023. Just one week later, Delta announced its expansion plans in the same route; however, Delta’s launch date will come three days earlier than Icelandair’s.

Delta is known to always defend its competitive position in aviation; thus, this is not coming as something new.

This is one of the newest routes the airline has added to its route map in the past year. In 2021 established its presence in New York and Minneapolis by adding one new route from LaGuardia to Providence, Rhode Island and another one connecting LaGuardia with the state capital in Albany (ALB). Both routes began operations in January 2022.
