American Airlines (AA) has signed a codeshare agreement with India’s leading budget carrier, IndiGo Airlines. Under this agreement, American Airlines will sell seats on IndiGo’s domestic network for twenty-nine (29) routes.
These routes will provide seamless connectivity to both inbound and outbound passengers traveling between the US and India. Initially, this agreement covers American flights originating or terminating from Delhi (DEL) and Bengaluru (BLR). The US and Indian governments are still to accord formal approval to this arrangement. The operations are likely to start in October this year.
This agreement comes close to the announcement of American Airlines starting new flights between New York (JFK) and DEL on October 31 and between Seattle (SEA) and Bengaluru on January 4, 2022.
American is the top airline in the US, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2020, the airlines flew 95.3 million passengers and reported a revenue of USD 13.5 billion.
IndiGo Ramps Up Domestic Capacity
IndiGo has been preparing for back-to- normal operations. In September, the airline announced thirty-eight (38) new domestic routes. With its fleet of 275 aircraft (and close to another 600 on order), the airline operated more than 1,100 daily flights, connecting 70 domestic destinations and 24 international destinations.
IndiGo carried more than 25 million passengers between January and August this year and maintained its market share over 50% in the domestic sectors, with a 97% on-time performance. (DGCA August 2021 report).
