Air India will reintroduce a few direct flights to Europe, with the destinations planned to be Milan, Vienna, Copenhagen, Paris, and Frankfurt. The flag carrier of India will fly to Milan, Vienna and Copenhagen from New Delhi, while the routes to Paris and Frankfurt will be from Mumbai. Air India is slowly starting to relaunch flights cancelled due to COVID, with the latest one being the route from Bengaluru to San Francisco.

Indira Gandhi International Airport

New Delhi links to Europe

The capital of India is going to have three new destinations to fly to starting in 2023: Milan, Vienna and Copenhagen. Air India used to fly these routes before the COVID pandemic; however, these services have been cancelled due to restrictions and are expected to be reintroduced at the beginning of 2023. All of these flights will be serviced by the airline’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft with 18 Business class seats and 238 Economy class seats.

Although New Delhi is just the second largest city in India in terms of population, it still boasts an impressive number of 11 million residents. Demand for links to Europe is growing quickly, and many people wanted the flights to Europe to be put back in place after the COVID pandemic.

Perhaps the most important destination out of all of these will be Milan. The Italian city is home to many of the Indian diaspora settled in the country. This flight is expected to service a fair amount of people as there are more than 200,000 Indians living in Italy. Air India plans to add four weekly flights starting from the 1st of February.

Two more cities where Air India will fly from Indira Gandhi International Airport will be Vienna and Copenhagen. These two hubs are strategically located in Central and Northern Europe, therefore creating accessible flights to India for European travelers. There will be three weekly flights to these destinations, starting on the 18th of February to Vienna and the 1st of March to Copenhagen.

Routes from Mumbai

Besides the direct links from New Delhi, Air India is going to reintroduce flights to Paris, Frankfurt and also New York from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The flights to Paris and Frankfurt will also be serviced by the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, while the ones to JFK International will see the airline’s Boeing 777-200LR aircraft fly over the Atlantic Ocean.

Mumbai is the largest city in India, having a population of over 12 million people. These flights will service a huge demand from natives and tourists looking to visit India or enjoy a trip to Europe or the United States. As more and more Indians seek to migrate towards better-developed countries, it will not be a surprise if all these flights are booked entirely. Nevertheless, India’s massive tourism potential will also benefit from these routes.

It is expected that in the next quarter, Air India will reintroduce three weekly flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle International and four weekly flights to the German hub of Frankfurt. Dates for these flights have not yet been specified.

The CEO of Air India, Campbell Wilson, commented on this expansion: “A key element of our five-year transformation plan, Vihaan.AI, is to strengthen India’s global network, connecting India’s major cities with even more destinations. The introduction of these new non-stop flights to New York, Milan, Vienna, Copenhagen, Paris and Frankfurt, is another step in that journey, which will accelerate as our aircraft fleet expands. We look forward to welcoming guests and sharing Air India’s warm Indian hospitality with them.”
